Recently, we had another harsh reminder that life is precious and far too short. I know none of us will ever really feel ready to say goodbye to our loved ones, but it seems like too many are taken before their time should be up. It’s heartbreakingly unfair for those of us left behind to grieve, and it leaves me at a loss for words…which almost never happens. I find myself needing to be around children during times like these.

Children seem to handle difficult life situations better than adults – well, with more grace than me at least. They take the hand they’re dealt without question and roll with it. They feel things and express true emotion without fear of how others will interpret them. They cry and really let it all out, and they smile and laugh in a room full of sad grown ups. In times of grief, I find great comfort just being around little ones. They help take my mind off reality. They give me hope of happiness, and when they finally rest after a long day of traveling, they give me a sense of peace. The reason children handle loss so well may be because they don’t fully understand they will not see that person again…or maybe it’s because they know they will.
