Swimming pools and ball diamonds are the best places to be in the summertime. On the weekends, you can find us cheering on Charlie’s tee ball team. This is his first experience with sports, and he’s learning a lot about being a good sport and playing as a team. I love seeing him out there with his game face on and trying his best. However, it’s watching him swim that has really impressed me lately. My little fish has really grown as a swimmer this summer. Last year, he didn’t pass level 1 swim lessons. I was worried he would be upset, so I didn’t read his evaluation to him on the last day of lessons. Instead, I left the paper upstairs on my nightstand for my husband to read – the swim instructor wrote really nice comments about our little fish. The next morning, my sweet boy found the paper and asked me to read it. Reluctantly, I read, “Charlie was great to have in class and he’s a sweetheart, but I think it would be best for him to repeat level 1…”
“So, you didn’t pass buddy. I’m sorry.”
“Mom!! She said I’m a sweetheart! Maybe she’ll be my instructor again for level 1 next year! I can’t wait to show this to Dad!!”
I learn so much from this kid. He always manages to find the silver lining. So, next time the day’s not going your way, take a lesson from Charlie’s playbook. Don’t dwell so much on the balls that rolled past your glove – focus on the ones you caught. Although, if I’m being totally honest, Charlie does gets super mad and pouts when he doesn’t catch the ball. Even the most positive people have their off days
He always ends the game with a smile on his face though.
Cheers to your glass always being half full!
